By Zoila Palma: Today, Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel that former leader Raúl Castro is involved in ongoing talks between Cuba and the United States, which he described as being in their early stages.
Díaz-Canel noted that the discussions are being handled collectively by the Cuban government, with Castro playing a guiding role alongside other state and party officials.
Talks come as Cuba faces a worsening energy crisis linked to an ongoing oil blockade imposed under U.S. President Donald Trump.
The blockade has resulted in a halt to fuel shipments over the past three months, contributing to prolonged nationwide blackouts and severe disruptions to economic and social activity across the island.
In a televised interview with Spanish political figure Pablo Iglesias, Díaz-Canel outlined that any agreement would require a gradual process, beginning with establishing dialogue channels and building mutual agendas. He also dismissed speculation of divisions within Cuba’s leadership, emphasizing that Castro remains an influential figure with enduring public support and historical recognition.
Meanwhile, the United Nations has warned that the deteriorating situation could lead to a humanitarian crisis.
