By Zoila Palma: Today, President Vladimir Putin said that any peace deal with Ukraine must guarantee Russia’s long-term security, emphasizing that Russia will not retreat from its territorial gains in the conflict.
Speaking to the relatives of Russian soldiers killed in Ukraine, Putin reaffirmed Russia’s stance, stating, “We must choose for ourselves a peace option that will suit us and ensure peace for our country in the long term.”
He also dismissed any idea of retreating from Russian-held territories, which currently amount to roughly 113,000 square km of Ukraine, Reuters report.
Putin indirectly criticized French President Emmanuel Macron, warning Western leaders not to underestimate Russia, referencing Napoleon Bonaparte’s failed invasion of Russia in 1812. “All the mistakes of our enemies began with underestimating the character of the Russian people,” Putin added.
This comes amid shifts in U.S. policy towards Ukraine under President Donald Trump, who has opened dialogue with Moscow, causing concern among European allies.
However, Macron’s comments calling Russia a threat to Europe have further strained relations with Moscow.
