By Zoila Palma: Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed support for a U.S. proposal for a ceasefire in Ukraine, but emphasized that any truce must address the root causes of the conflict and clarify many details.
Speaking after talks with Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, Putin acknowledged the idea was “correct,” but insisted that a lasting peace could only be achieved if it addressed the core issues driving the crisis.
While backing the ceasefire in principle, Putin raised concerns about ensuring that Ukraine would not use the pause to regroup militarily, Reuters report.
He stressed the need for discussions with the U.S. on the terms and conditions of the ceasefire, stating that both sides must address critical questions, including control mechanisms.
Putin’s remarks come amid ongoing Russian military advances in Ukraine, particularly in the Kursk region, and suggest that Moscow may be seeking time to solidify its territorial gains. The Russian leader also hinted at possible discussions with U.S. President Donald Trump, who has expressed interest in playing a role in ending the conflict.
Although Putin’s comments signaled openness to dialogue, his conditions for a ceasefire appear to delay any immediate resolution. Meanwhile, Russia continues to press its demands for a broader deal with the U.S. and has also indicated its willingness to welcome back Western companies, though Moscow now relies more heavily on domestic production.
