By Zoila Palma: Protests against federal immigration raids are spreading beyond Los Angeles, with over 30 demonstrations planned across major U.S. cities this week.
The unrest began after a wave of workplace raids and escalated when SEIU California President David Huerta was arrested during a Friday protest in L.A, Time reports.
Demonstrators have since rallied in cities including San Francisco, Houston, Chicago, and New York. In L.A., protests turned confrontational, with clashes between protesters and law enforcement.
Police used tear gas and rubber bullets, while the California Highway Patrol deployed flash-bangs to disperse crowds. Over 150 arrests have been reported.
President Donald Trump deployed 2,000 National Guard troops to Los Angeles, bypassing Governor Gavin Newsom, who criticized the move as unconstitutional. Trump labeled the protesters “insurrectionists” and called for arrests.
SEIU and other labor groups are leading calls for Huerta’s release, condemning what they describe as “military-style” immigration tactics.
Demonstrations are planned in cities including D.C., Boston, Seattle, and Philadelphia, with L.A. remaining the epicenter of resistance.
