By Aaron Humes: Prince Andrew has announced he will voluntarily relinquish his Royal Family titles following revelations from investigative journalism, including a recent exposé by the O’Keefe Media Group. The report brought to light statements from his advisor, John Bryan, who alleged that Prince Andrew engaged with underage girls, intensifying scrutiny on the prince’s past associations.

Meanwhile, according to the BBC, the Metropolitan Police have stated they are actively investigating claims indicating that Prince Andrew attempted to gather personal information about his accuser, Virginia Giuffre, through his police protection officer. A spokesperson for the police mentioned, “We are aware of media reporting and are actively looking into the claims made.”

Giuffre, who took her own life earlier this year, had accused Prince Andrew of being one of the men who sexually exploited her during her youth at the hands of convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein and his network. In her allegations, Giuffre maintained that she was forced to engage in sexual activities with the prince on three occasions, starting when she was just 17.

Reports have emerged that prior to a newspaper publishing a photograph of his encounter with Giuffre in 2011, Prince Andrew had requested that his police protection officer investigate her, even providing confidential information such as her date of birth and social security number. This prompted Energy Secretary Ed Miliband to label the situation “deeply concerning,” stressing that the conduct in question should not involve police officers meant to ensure safety.

On Friday, Prince Andrew announced his decision to step down from his titles, including his Duke of York designation, an honor gifted to him by his mother, the late Queen Elizabeth II. This relinquishment follows a period in which he had already ceased to act as a “working royal,” losing his HRH title and withdrawing from public royal duties. The latest development signals an even more diminished role for the prince within the Royal Family.

Emily Maitlis, the journalist known for her probing 2019 interview with Prince Andrew on BBC Newsnight, remarked that this decision was “a long time coming.” In that interview, Prince Andrew had claimed he severed ties with Epstein in 2010; however, subsequent emails revealed he continued to communicate with Epstein years later. Maitlis expressed concern over the discrepancy between his claims and the evidence, highlighting the confusion his statements have caused.

Prince Andrew’s history has been marred by scandal, culminating in a significant out-of-court settlement with Giuffre in 2022 after she filed a civil lawsuit against him. A forthcoming memoir by Giuffre is anticipated to shed more light on her experiences and the prince’s involvement, potentially reigniting public interest and scrutiny.

In response to these ongoing revelations, Sky Roberts, Giuffre’s brother, shared his belief that his sister would be proud of the latest developments regarding Prince Andrew. He called for the removal of the prince’s title entirely, asserting that those implicated should face accountability for the victims of Epstein.

Former BBC royal correspondent Jenny Bond noted that public demand for further action against Prince Andrew is likely to persist, as discussions continue to center not just on the Prince, but predominantly on the victims of Jeffrey Epstein, with Virginia Giuffre as a key figure in this narrative.
