By Zoila Palma: Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar has denied any involvement by Trinidad and Tobago in United States military operations in Venezuela, following claims by U.S. President Donald Trump that a large-scale strike led to the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro.

In a social media post early today, Persad-Bissessar said the U.S. had commenced military action within Venezuelan territory but stressed that Trinidad and Tobago “is NOT a participant in any of these ongoing military operations” and continues to maintain peaceful relations with the Venezuelan people.

The position was later reaffirmed in a statement from the Ministry of Foreign and Caricom Affairs.

The United States reportedly launched major strikes on Venezuela in the early hours of Saturday, January 3, 2026, with explosions and fires reported at several military and infrastructure sites, including Fuerte Tiuna, La Carlota and the Port of La Guaira.

Trump claimed that Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, were captured during the operation and flown out of the country.

The Venezuelan government has since declared a State of Emergency, while Vice President Delcy Rodríguez said Maduro’s whereabouts remain unknown and called for proof of life.

Regional leaders are closely monitoring the unfolding situation.

CARICOM said its Heads of Government met earlier today, describing the developments as a matter of grave concern with potential implications for neighboring states.
