By Zoila Palma:  Mexico officially marked its commitment to the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Monday as President Claudia Sheinbaum led the traditional flag-presentation ceremony for the national team.

The event, known as the “abanderamiento”, honored the 26 players selected to represent the country at the world’s biggest sporting tournament, Latin Times report.

The ceremony was held at the Centro de Alto Rendimiento (CAR), the Mexican Football Federation’s training headquarters and the national team’s preparation base. Players, coaching staff, and executives from Liga MX clubs gathered for the event, which highlighted the nation’s support for the squad ahead of the tournament.

Veteran goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa received the national flag from President Sheinbaum on behalf of the team. At 41 years old, Ochoa is set to compete in his sixth World Cup, further cementing his status as one of the most experienced leaders on coach Javier Aguirre’s squad.

During the ceremony, Sheinbaum formally entrusted the team with the national colors and administered an oath, asking the players if they pledged to honor and defend the flag with loyalty and constancy. The team responded together, “Yes, I pledge.”

In her remarks, Sheinbaum expressed hope that the team’s performance would inspire millions of Mexicans to believe in the power of sport and the pursuit of their dreams. She concluded by wishing the squad success and leading a chant in support of the national team. Aguirre’s final 26-man roster was selected from an initial pool of 55 players and includes a mix of experienced veterans and younger talent from Liga MX and European clubs.

Mexico will debut on Thursday, June 11, against South Africa at Estadio Ciudad de México.
