By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On Tuesday, President of Ecuador Daniel Noboa issued a decree declaring a state of emergency in 5 provinces citing “internal armed conflict” as the reason.
This is the 2nd time that Noboa has invoked emergency powers since assuming office in November.
His administration has been committed to addressing a deteriorating security situation, characterized by a surge in violent incidents and other criminal activities.
The State of Emergency applies to the provinces of El Oro, Guayas, Los Rios, Manabi, and Santa Elena and will be effective for a period of 60 days, as outlined in the decree.
According to the document, the deployment of police and armed forces in these provinces is deemed necessary to conduct tactical combat operations against organized armed groups operating in the region.
The Government blames the surge in violence to drug trafficking gangs.
