By Zoila Palma: Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum was harassed in public on Tuesday afternoon while walking through downtown Mexico City, when an unidentified man approached her, attempted to kiss her, and touched her breast in full view of cameras and onlookers.
The incident, captured on video, showed the man placing his arm around the president before being stopped by Juan José Ramírez Mendoza, head of the General Directorate of Aides-de-Camp.
The episode has provoked widespread outrage and renewed discussions about the normalization of sexual harassment in Mexico, where nearly half of all women report experiencing street harassment, El Pais reports.
The president’s security team was slow to respond, reigniting debate about Sheinbaum’s decision—like her predecessor Andrés Manuel López Obrador—not to maintain a presidential security detail.
Critics argue that the incident exposes serious gaps in presidential protection, especially in a country still reeling from the assassination of Uruapan Mayor Carlos Manzo just days earlier.
While the aggressor was reportedly detained, authorities have yet to confirm his arrest. According to Mexico’s Penal Code, non-consensual physical contact can carry a sentence of up to five years in prison.
Women’s rights advocates say the episode underscores the everyday reality of gender-based violence across the country.
The Secretariat for Women, established during Sheinbaum’s administration, issued a statement saying, “Unfortunately, no woman is exempt from experiencing sexual harassment. This type of behavior not only violates women but is also a crime.” Activist Diana Luz Vázquez noted, “If a man does that to the female president, imagine what the rest of us experience. This is a moment for her to send a powerful message and to stop normalizing violence.”
The incident has reignited national conversations about public safety, accountability, and respect for women in Mexico.
