By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Today, Kenyan authorities commenced preparations for the deployment of Kenyan police to Haiti as the country continues to face a severe humanitarian crisis fueled by gang violence.
According to the Associated Press, the Regional Director for the Haitian National Police Frantz Elbe met with Kenyan Authorities today.
Elbe “is on a three-day official visit to Kenya for bilateral security discussions between the two law enforcement agencies,” a statement said.
Earlier this year, the United Nations Security Council approved the deployment of a Kenyan-led foreign armed force to Haiti to help bring gang violence under control.
Data shows that from July 1 to September 30 this year, there were over 1230 murders and 701 kidnappings reported in Haiti.
The police chief visit comes days after a Kenyan team visited Haiti and met with authorities there.
Kenyan police would lead a U.N.-backed multinational force to Haiti, but the proposed deployment has proved controversial as it faces a legal hurdle at home.
