International News: Powerful 7.8-magnitude quake leaves 32 dead in Southern Philippines

By Zoila Palma:  A powerful 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of the southern Philippines this morning, leaving at least 32 people dead, injuring more than 130 others, and displacing about 70,000 residents.

According to civil defense officials, the quake struck at approximately 7:37 a.m. local time, toppling buildings, damaging bridges, and causing widespread destruction across the southern island of Mindanao.

Authorities reported that 19 people were killed in the provinces of Sarangani and South Cotabato, while a landslide triggered by the earthquake claimed the lives of 13 additional people in the town of Glan, Sarangani.

Officials said 134 people were injured and around a dozen remained missing as emergency teams continued assessing the extent of the disaster.

General Santos City, known as the tuna capital of the Philippines and home to about 700,000 people, was among the hardest-hit areas, BBC reports.

 The Office of Civil Defense reported major damage to infrastructure, disruptions to power and communications, and damage to General Santos International Airport, prompting the cancellation of 17 flights.
