By Zoila Palma: Pope Leo XIV, the first American to lead the Catholic Church, expressed concern over “some things” happening in the United States in his first major interview since his election in May.
While refraining from partisan politics, he said some U.S. decisions appear to prioritize economics over human dignity, particularly in relation to immigration, CNN reports.
He praised U.S. bishops for responding courageously to a letter from Pope Francis earlier this year that criticized deportation policies under the Trump administration.
The pontiff acknowledged he has not yet met President Donald Trump but said he is prepared to raise difficult issues if given the opportunity.
At the same time, he emphasized his focus will be on working with U.S. bishops rather than direct political engagement. “The fact that I am American means people can’t say, like they did about Francis, that I don’t understand the United States,” he noted.
Still, he signaled a less confrontational tone than his predecessor, while leaving the door open to challenge U.S. leaders on matters of human dignity and peace.
Pope Leo also revealed he rejected a proposal to create an artificial intelligence version of himself, describing the idea of a virtual “artificial me” as inappropriate for the papacy.
While stressing he is not against AI, he warned of the dangers of technology driven by profit rather than humanity, urging the Church to play a strong role in shaping ethical debates around science and innovation.
