By Zoila Palma: Today, Pope Leo XIV made a personal visit to the Rome headquarters of his Augustinian order, where he served as superior for 12 years before becoming the first American and first Augustinian pope.
The pope celebrated Mass and shared lunch with fellow friars at the Agostinianum, just outside St. Peter’s Square, AP reports.
“The atmosphere was of great fraternity,” said Rev. Gabriele Pedicino, head of the order’s Italian branch.
Leo, elected on May 8, has emphasized his identity as a “son of St. Augustine.” He wears a cross with the saint’s relics and chose an Augustinian motto for his papal coat of arms: In Illo uno unum — “In the One, we are one.”
Known for promoting unity in diversity, Pope Leo is expected to apply Augustinian values of community, service, and inclusion in his leadership.
