International News: Pope Leo XIV and Haiti’s PM meet as country grapples with escalating violence

By Zoila Palma:  Pope Leo XIV met with Alix Didier Fils-Aimé on Saturday as Haiti continues to grapple with escalating violence and insecurity, particularly in the capital, Port-au-Prince, where armed gangs control large sections of the city.

According to the Holy See Press Office, discussions during the meeting focused on the relationship between the Vatican and Haiti, as well as the role of the Catholic Church in supporting the country during what was described as a difficult period.

The Vatican noted that the Church continues to make a “valuable contribution” amid the ongoing crisis.

The talks also addressed Haiti’s worsening socio-political and humanitarian challenges, including migration and security concerns.

The Vatican said the two leaders discussed the need for greater involvement from the international community to help Haiti confront its current difficulties.

Following his audience with the Pope, Fils-Aimé also met with Cardinal Pietro Parolin and Paul Richard Gallagher at the Vatican. The meetings come as Haiti prepares for general elections scheduled for August 30, 2026, which are expected to include voting for president, parliamentarians, and mayors.

Haiti has faced growing instability since the assassination of former President Jovenel Moïse in 2021.
