By Zoila Palma:  Pope Leo has welcomed the announcement of a temporary ceasefire in the Middle East, calling it a hopeful step toward ending weeks of escalating tensions in the region.

Speaking at the conclusion of his General Audience on 8 April, the Pope described the development as “a sign of deep hope” following the agreement reached the previous evening.

Addressing pilgrims gathered in St Peter’s Square, the Pope stressed that lasting peace can only come through diplomacy. He urged all parties involved in the conflict to return to negotiations, saying dialogue remains the only path capable of bringing the war to an end.

The ceasefire agreement, announced on 7 April, involves Iran, the United States, and Israel, and is set to last for two weeks. The deal followed a de-escalation in rhetoric, with U.S. President Donald Trump stepping back from earlier threats against Iran.

In a statement released the following day, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed support for the temporary halt in strikes against Iran, while noting that the ceasefire does not extend to Lebanon, where violence has continued and more than 1,500 people have reportedly been killed.

The Pope also called on people worldwide to support peace efforts through prayer.
