By Zoila Palma: Pope Leo has urged the United States to avoid any military intervention in Venezuela, warning that an incursion would escalate tensions and undermine prospects for stability.

Speaking to reporters aboard the papal plane returning from Beirut, the first American-born pontiff said Washington should instead pursue dialogue or economic pressure.

He noted growing concern among church leaders in Venezuela and said the situation required “ways to calm” rather than intensify the crisis, CNN reports.

The pope’s comments come amid heightened friction between Washington and Caracas, following reports of potential U.S. military activity.

Leo highlighted recent communication between President Donald Trump and Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, cautioning that shifting messages from Washington made the situation fluid.

During the wide-ranging in-flight press conference, he also addressed migration debates in Western nations, calling on Europe and North America to be “less fearful” of immigrants and urging societies to resist rhetoric that frames people of different faiths and backgrounds as threats.

Leo also underscored Europe’s essential role in efforts to forge a peace plan for Ukraine, as U.S. envoys met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow.

He said early proposals from Washington appeared to sideline Europe but were revised due to European concerns, stressing that a sustainable peace required continental cooperation.

The pope additionally revealed personal reflections on his May 2025 election, sharing that he had considered retirement before accepting the role and entrusting the future to faith.
