By Zoila Palma: Pope Leo XIV has urged European leaders to pursue dialogue and negotiation rather than relying on military buildups to address conflicts threatening the continent.
Speaking in Metz, France today, the pope warned against what he described as the “illusion that rearmament is the answer” and called for greater commitment to peaceful solutions.
Addressing religious and civil leaders at the Robert Schuman conference center, Pope Leo said war had returned to Europe and called for “patient dialogue” and courage in negotiations. He acknowledged that the pursuit of peace should not be confused with what he called “a naive form of pacifism,” but said leaders must actively work toward peace rather than simply preparing for future wars.
The pope also called for stronger multilateralism and respect for international law, describing them as an “antidote” to the desire for domination that he said lies behind conflicts.
He pointed to Europe’s experience over the past eight decades, saying the continent had demonstrated that different opinions and interests can be addressed through engagement rather than conflict.
Pope Leo also addressed migration, urging European leaders to view the arrival of migrants and refugees fleeing war, persecution and poverty as an opportunity for cultural integration rather than exclusion.
