By Zoila Palma: Today, Pope Leo said that his visit to Africa carries a message of unity and peace “the world needs to hear,” as he continues to face criticism from U.S. President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance over his stance on the war in Iran, CNN reports.
Speaking aboard the papal plane en route from Algeria to Cameroon, the pontiff emphasized the importance of coexistence despite religious and cultural differences.
During his visit to Algeria, the pope highlighted his stop at the Great Mosque of Algiers and the birthplace of Saint Augustine of Hippo, a key figure who inspired his vocation.
Leo said the visit to the mosque demonstrated that people of different beliefs and ways of life can still live together peacefully, adding that promoting such an image is something urgently needed in today’s world.
The trip, which began in a Muslim-majority country, comes as the pontiff has grown increasingly critical of U.S. military actions in Iran, positioning himself in contrast to the Trump administration.
The tensions have escalated in recent days, with Trump and Vance issuing sharp public criticisms, while the pope has maintained he has “no fear” of the administration and continues to speak out on global issues.
