International News: Pope Leo draws 40,000 people to 1st South American mass in Uruguay

By Zoila Palma:  An estimated 40,000 people gathered in Paysandú, western Uruguay, today to attend Pope Leo XIV’s first Mass in South America.

The large turnout marked a significant moment in his three-nation tour, as the pontiff seeks to strengthen the Catholic Church’s presence in Uruguay, considered the most secular country in the region, The Chicago Tribune reports.

Crowds welcomed the Pope with cheers, horns and chants of “Olé, olé, olé, Pope, Pope!” as he arrived at the Mass site in Parque París Londres in his open-sided popemobile.

More than 30,000 people had registered in advance to attend the service, while the Vatican estimated that another 10,000 showed up despite rainy weather and strong winds.

The Mass was the first major religious event of Leo’s 12-day South American tour, which had been uncertain following his recent lung cancer surgery on October 13.

Many attendees expressed admiration for his decision to continue the visit, describing his presence as a message of hope, peace and encouragement during difficult times.

During his visit, Leo is seeking to encourage Uruguayans to reconnect with the Catholic faith and turn to religion for guidance amid modern challenges.
