By Zoila Palma: Pope Francis is remembered for elevating the role of women in the Vatican, appointing them to senior positions and granting them voting rights in synods.
Yet, critics say his papacy fell short on deeper reforms, particularly around women’s ordination and the Church’s response to abuse cases involving nuns.
While Francis often praised women’s leadership, he upheld the ban on female priests and faced criticism over the slow handling of abuse allegations, such as those against Jesuit priest Marko Rupnik, Guardian reports.
Despite being excommunicated and later expelled from the Jesuits, Rupnik remains a priest, and his victims say the Church has dragged its feet in pursuing justice.
As cardinals prepare to elect the next pope, women remain largely absent from decision-making — serving instead in supportive roles behind the scenes.
Advocates say true change can only come if women are granted full participation, including access to the priesthood.
