By Zoila Palma: Pope Francis, 88, has been diagnosed with bilateral pneumonia after a recent bout of bronchitis worsened, AP reports.

The Vatican confirmed on Wednesday that the pope, who has been hospitalized in Rome’s Gemelli hospital since Friday, is in good spirits, had a peaceful night, and ate breakfast.

Despite the serious nature of the infection, which affects both lungs, Francis is breathing on his own and receiving treatment with cortisone and antibiotics.

He has continued with his routine, reading newspapers and working from his hospital room. The Vatican has not indicated how long his stay will be, as his age and limited mobility put him at risk for complications.

Pilgrims at the Vatican continue their visits, with many offering prayers for his recovery despite his canceled weekly audience.
