By Zoila Palma: Pope Francis called the U.S. migrant deportations under Donald Trump a “major crisis,” condemning the actions for damaging the dignity of migrants.
In a letter to U.S. bishops, the Pope urged Catholics and others to resist discriminatory narratives against migrants, emphasizing the vulnerability of those fleeing poverty and violence.
According to AFP, Trump’s border czar, Tom Homan, quickly rebuffed the Pope, advising him to “stick to the Catholic Church” and leave border enforcement to the U.S. government.
He also pointed out the irony of the Vatican’s wall, asking, “We can’t have a wall around the United States?”
The Pope, who has long advocated for migrant rights, acknowledged a nation’s right to defend itself from criminals but warned that mass deportations could lead to greater suffering for vulnerable people.
He argued that policies based on force rather than human dignity would ultimately fail.
