By Zoila Palma: At least 19 people were killed in Colombia on Thursday following two deadly incidents that police are calling terrorist attacks.
A Colombian National Police helicopter was brought down by a drone strike in Antioquia, while a suspected car bomb detonated outside a military air base in Cali, leaving multiple casualties, CNN reports.
Officials have not confirmed whether the two attacks are connected.
According to Antioquia Gov. Andrés Julián Rendón, the police helicopter was attacked while supporting operations to eradicate illicit crops.
The crash killed at least 13 officers, which Defense Minister Pedro Arnulfo Sánchez blamed on the 36th Front of the Estado Mayor Central (EMC), a dissident faction of the former FARC guerrilla group.
President Gustavo Petro initially suggested involvement by the Gulf Clan, a powerful criminal network, but later attributed responsibility to the EMC.
By Friday, the Colombian military was firing artillery to target the group believed responsible.
Hours later, an explosion outside the Marco Fidel Suárez air base in Cali killed six people and injured 78 others.
Police said the blast was caused by a car bomb, prompting tightened security at the city’s entry points and restrictions on truck movement.
Mayor Alejandro Eder confirmed emergency crews were treating the wounded and announced a nearly $100,000 reward for information about those behind the bombing.
No group has yet claimed responsibility, though officials noted the area has faced repeated attacks by armed dissidents in recent years.
