By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: In the last 3 years, Haiti’s national police have reportedly lost almost 3,300 officers.
The SYNAPOHA trade union indicated that almost 9 of 10 of those officers abandoned their posts amidst the humanitarian and gang crisis the country faces.
More than 100 police officers resigned, Reuters report.
In addition, an estimated 80 police officers died in action in 2023.
The report by the Trade Union indicated that the officers need significantly higher incentives to justify the dangers.
It highlighted needs for armored vehicles, helicopters, guns and drones.
“The government should assume responsibility. It’s not just about purchasing equipment, the police need to be supplied with the financial means to plan operations, for cops working day in, day out in areas controlled by bandits,” Trade Union coordinator Lionel Lazarre said.
About 200,000 people in Haiti have been displaced due to violent gangs.
In October, 2022, Haiti began calling for international reinforcements and last year, the U.N. ratified sending a force composed of voluntary contributions.
