By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Wildlife photographer Chris Atkinson, 44, from East Yorkshire, recently captured a rare phenomenon known as a Brocken spectre while birdwatching at Bempton Cliffs, BBC reports.
On October 18, while searching for peregrine falcons, he noticed a circular rainbow in the mist and later realized it was his own shadow magnified in the mist.
The Met Office describes a Brocken spectre as an observer’s large shadow cast onto cloud or mist.
After sharing the image on social media, Atkinson received over 1,300 positive responses, including from the RSPB Bempton CliffsFacebook page.
Atkinson, who usually photographs wildlife and sunsets, said this unusual photo is now his favorite.
RSPB Bempton Cliffs’ visitor experience manager, Dannie Jackson, noted that such phenomena are rare and require specific weather conditions to occur.
A Met Office spokesperson added that the shadow can appear much larger than life, creating a striking visual effect.
