By Zoila Palma: The U.S. Department of Defense has officially accepted a luxury Boeing 747-8 from Qatar to serve as a temporary Air Force One while new presidential aircraft are delayed, ABC reports.
Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell confirmed the jet’s acceptance followed all federal guidelines. The aircraft, previously used by the Qatari royal family and described as a “flying palace,” will be retrofitted for presidential use while Boeing continues work on the overdue replacement fleet, now expected in 2027.
President Trump praised the gift, saying, “They’re giving us a free jet,” and stressed it was a donation to the U.S. government, not to him personally.
The Trump administration says the plane will later be transferred to the Donald J. Trump Presidential Library Foundation.
The move has sparked ethical concerns. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) called it “the largest bribe from a foreign government in American history” and is pushing legislation to ban the use of foreign aircraft as Air Force One.
The Air Force is now working to bring the jet up to presidential security standards, though officials have not disclosed the timeline or cost for modifications.
