By Horace Palacio: A passenger plane carrying 67 people crashed near the city of Aktau in western Kazakhstan on Christmas morning, leaving dozens feared dead, according to the country’s emergencies ministry.
The Embraer 190 aircraft, operated by Azerbaijan Airlines, was en route from Baku, Azerbaijan, to Grozny, Russia, when it was rerouted to Aktau due to heavy fog. Authorities report that 32 people, including two children, survived the crash.
A video circulating online, believed to capture the crash, shows the aircraft plummeting rapidly before erupting into a fireball on impact. Photos from the crash site reveal the wreckage, with emergency workers surrounding the tail section of the destroyed plane.
Kazakhstani officials confirmed that more than 50 rescuers responded to the crash, extinguishing the subsequent fire. Four bodies have been recovered so far, while survivors are receiving medical treatment at a nearby hospital.
Azerbaijan Airlines stated that the plane was forced to make an emergency landing at Aktau airport. The airline added that the passengers included 37 Azerbaijani citizens, 16 Russians, six Kazakhstani, and three Kyrgyzstani nationals.
Russia’s aviation regulator suggested that preliminary findings point to a bird strike as a possible cause of the crash, prompting the pilot’s decision to attempt an emergency landing. However, the exact circumstances remain unclear as investigations continue.
Russian President Vladimir Putin extended condolences to Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, while Ramzan Kadyrov, the leader of Chechnya, expressed his sympathies and stated that those hospitalized are in critical condition.
Investigators are working to uncover the factors that led to the tragic incident.
