By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Paris Olympics organizers have since apologized to those offended by a tableau in Friday’s opening ceremony that some critics claimed resembled Leonardo da Vinci’s “The Last Supper.”
Despite the backlash, organizers defended the artistic concept behind the scene.
According to CBS News, the controversial segment featured DJ and producer Barbara Butch, an LGBTQ+ icon, and included drag artists and dancers on a footbridge across the Seine.
Critics, including religious conservatives and various global figures, decried the segment as a mockery of Christianity.
The organizers clarified that the scene was inspired by Jan Harmensz van Biljert’s 17th-century painting “The Feast of the Gods,” not “The Last Supper.”
Thomas Jolly, the ceremony’s artistic director, emphasized that the depiction was intended to celebrate Dionysus, the Greek god of wine, and was meant as a “pagan party” rather than a religious mockery.
“The idea was to create a big pagan party in link with the God of Mount Olympus — and you will never find in me, or in my work, any desire of mocking anyone,” Jolly said.
The French Catholic Church, Russian officials, and various international religious groups condemned the portrayal.
