By Zoila Palma: Panama aims to maintain a “respectful” relationship with the United States, despite President Donald Trump’s repeated threats to retake the Panama Canal, Foreign Minister Javier Martinez-Acha said on Saturday.
His comments came ahead of a visit by US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, which follows Trump’s concerns over alleged Chinese influence in the canal, AFP reports.
Martinez-Acha emphasized Panama’s commitment to cooperating with the US within the framework of its laws and the Canal Neutrality Treaty, stressing the importance of transparent and mutually beneficial relations.
During a recent call with US Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau, Martinez-Acha highlighted issues such as illegal migration, organized crime, and drug trafficking.
The US expressed gratitude for Panama’s efforts in reducing illegal immigration through the Darien jungle.
They also discussed the recent sale of a Panama Canal port concession from Hong Kong’s CK Hutchison to US firm BlackRock. Panama’s comptroller has been auditing Hutchison since January.
The Panama Canal, a critical trade route, is strategically important to both the US and China, which are its two largest users.
