By Zoila Palma: On Wednesday, President of Panama Jose Raul Mulino forcefully rejected warnings from China that Panama would pay a “heavy price” after the country moved to revoke a port concession held by Hong Kong–based CK Hutchison.
Writing on X, Mulino said Panama upholds the rule of law and respects the independence of its judiciary, following a Supreme Court ruling that invalidated the company’s concession at two key ports on the Panama Canal.
China’s Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office accused Panama of yielding to external pressure after the court ruled the concession unconstitutional, citing terms that disproportionately favored the company and harmed the state treasury.
The ruling followed mounting pressure from U.S. President Donald Trump, who has threatened to reclaim the canal over what he described as excessive Chinese influence.
While Washington welcomed the decision, Beijing warned that Panama faced political and economic consequences if it did not reverse course, AP reports.
Mulino condemned the remarks as unacceptable, saying Panama would respond through diplomatic channels and take appropriate measures.
