By Zoila Palma: Hundreds of Palestinians celebrated with tears, embraces, and chants of joy as Israel released detainees and prisoners as part of a wide-ranging exchange deal with Hamas, BBC reports.
Around 250 convicted prisoners and 1,700 detainees from Gaza who had been held without charge were freed and reunited with their families across the occupied West Bank and Gaza. The scenes in Ramallah and Khan Younis were marked by emotion and exhaustion, as the freed men and women—many appearing frail and weak—stepped off Red Cross buses to the cheers of loved ones.
The release, which also saw Hamas return 20 Israeli hostages and the remains of four others, marked a key step in the first phase of President Donald Trump’s Gaza peace plan.
In the West Bank, about 100 prisoners were released, while others were deported or sent to East Jerusalem.
Israeli authorities had warned families to avoid large public celebrations or waving political flags.
Still, crowds gathered quietly, holding photos of relatives who had spent years—or decades—behind bars.
In Gaza, hundreds gathered at Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis to receive their loved ones, with medical tents prepared for returning detainees.
Human rights groups and families have accused Israeli authorities of mistreating prisoners before their release, alleging beatings and deliberate starvation.
