By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Over 6,000 inmates escaped from Maputo Central Prison in Mozambique on Christmas Day following a violent rebellion.
The country’s police chief, Bernardino Rafael, confirmed that 33 prisoners died and 15 were injured in clashes with security forces, AP reports.
The unrest occurred amid widespread protests and riots sparked by the confirmation of the ruling Frelimo party’s victory in the disputed October elections.
The escape began around midday after protesters near the prison caused agitation, leading to a collapsed wall and prisoners overpowering guards.
Among the escapees were 29 convicted terrorists, raising concerns for public safety. Videos shared online show inmates fleeing the facility, with some later recaptured.
The violence, driven by supporters of losing candidate Venancio Mondlane, has intensified since the electoral result was announced. U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres has expressed concern and called for dialogue and efforts to resolve the crisis peacefully.
