By Zoila Palma: Ontario Premier Doug Ford is warning that an escalating trade war between the United States and Canada could have devastating consequences for both countries, as tensions continue to rise over tariffs imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump.
Ford strongly criticized the tariffs and said they could ultimately hurt the American economy, ABC reports.
“Everyone’s feeling bullied by President Trump, and this is the worst thing you could do for the American economy,” Ford said. “I just don’t see the purpose. It’s absolutely backwards.”
The United States recently announced plans to impose an additional 50% tariff on many Canadian goods after trade negotiations broke down, while Canada is set to respond with retaliatory tariffs beginning September 8.
Ford also pointed to the importance of Canada’s role in supplying crude oil to the United States, saying Washington must decide whether it wants to rely on Canada or pursue alternatives such as Venezuela. “Well, you know something? That’s going to be up to President Trump. Who do you want to deal with? An unstable government like Venezuela, or do you want to deal with your No. 1 trading partner, your No. 1 ally?” Ford said.
Trump has also threatened to double auto tariffs on Canadian vehicles beginning January 1, 2027.
Ford said such a move would be “devastating” for both countries, particularly because Canada is a major purchaser of U.S.-made vehicles.
