International News: Observers condemn Venezuelan election amid growing protests

Posted: Wednesday, July 31, 2024. 1:37 pm CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: A prominent NGO invited by Venezuelan officials to monitor Sunday’s presidential election has condemned the poll as “not democratic.”

The US-based Carter Center, which sent 17 experts and observers at the request of Venezuela’s National Electoral Council (CNE), said it could not “verify or corroborate” the CNE’s declared results.

According to the BBC, the CNE which is closely aligned with the government, announced President Nicolás Maduro as the winner.

However, the opposition claims that voting tallies indicate their candidate, Edmundo González, won by a substantial margin.

In a statement released Wednesday, the Carter Center criticized the CNE for not providing detailed results by polling station, labeling this omission as a serious breach of electoral standards.

The NGO also accused the CNE of demonstrating clear bias towards Maduro and exhibiting a “complete lack of transparency” in reporting the results.

This condemnation by the Carter Center adds to the pressure on the CNE, which is already facing calls from the US, Brazil, and the EU to release detailed voting data.

The disputed election results have sparked widespread protests across Venezuela, with demonstrators taking to the streets for a second consecutive day on Tuesday.

The NGO reported 11 deaths and numerous injuries related to the unrest.

In response to the unrest, more than 700 individuals have been detained, according to Venezuela’s attorney general, who also reported the deaths of two security personnel.

Opposition leader María Corina Machado has urged her supporters to maintain peace despite provocations from the government and its allies.
