International News: Norovirus cases surge in U.S. this Winter

Posted: Monday, December 30, 2024. 9:49 am CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Norovirus cases are spiking in the U.S. this winter, with recent data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) showing 91 outbreaks in the week of Dec. 5, up from 69 outbreaks in late November.

This marks a sharp increase, as previous years saw no more than 65 outbreaks during the same period.

Norovirus, a leading cause of foodborne illness, spreads easily through contaminated food, water, or surfaces. It causes sudden vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain, and fever, with symptoms appearing 12 to 48 hours after exposure.

Most people recover in one to three days, but the virus leads to 900 deaths and 109,000 hospitalizations annually, especially among the elderly and young children, AP reports.

To protect against infection, health experts recommend frequent handwashing and disinfecting surfaces.

Dehydration is a major concern, and anyone experiencing symptoms of dehydration is urged to seek medical attention.
