By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Norovirus cases are on the rise in the United States, with 91 outbreaks reported in the week of December 5, according to the CDC—up from 69 the previous week.
Dr. Leana Wen, an emergency physician and public health expert, explained to CNN that norovirus, a leading cause of foodborne illness, spreads easily through contaminated surfaces or direct contact with infected individuals.
Symptoms include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and stomach cramps, and most people recover within one to two days.
However, dehydration is a risk, especially for vulnerable groups.
Dr. Wen advises staying hydrated and seeking medical attention if unable to keep fluids down, or if symptoms worsen.
To prevent spreading norovirus, Dr. Wen recommends thorough handwashing, especially after using the bathroom and before eating, and avoiding food preparation if symptomatic.
Cleaning infected surfaces with bleach solutions is also crucial. As norovirus can easily spread in households, taking extra precautions can help limit exposure.
