International News: Norovirus cases surge in the U.S.; Health experts share preventive tips

According to recent CDC data, more than 22% of tests returned positive for norovirus as of December 28, 2024, up from 12% during the same week in 2023.

This highly contagious gastrointestinal virus spreads quickly through direct contact, contaminated food or water, and surfaces.

Norovirus typically causes symptoms like vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and fever within 12 to 48 hours of exposure.

There is no specific antiviral treatment for norovirus, so managing the illness focuses on hydration and symptom relief.

Health experts recommend sipping clear liquids and electrolyte-rich drinks to prevent dehydration, while consuming light foods like broth and rice aids recovery.

Prevention involves proper handwashing, disinfecting high-touch surfaces with bleach, and isolating infected individuals. Recovery usually takes three to five days, but maintaining hygiene is crucial to stop further spread of the virus.
