International News: Nicaragua frees dozens of political prisoners under U.S. pressure

By Zoila Palma:  The Nicaraguan government announced on Saturday that it has released “dozens” of detainees, including political prisoners and government critics, as it marks the 19th anniversary of President Daniel Ortega’s time in power.

State media and official statements described the releases as part of a symbolic effort toward “reconciliation, peace and the right of all to a family and community life,” though authorities did not disclose the names or specific charges of those freed.

Reports from exile-based media and rights groups suggest the number of released prisoners ranges from about 20 to 30, with several opposition activists and social leaders among them.

According to The Tico Times, the move comes amid heightened international scrutiny, particularly from the United States, which has publicly urged Managua to free unjustly detained individuals.

The U.S. Embassy in Managua recently highlighted that, while Venezuela has released “a large number of political prisoners,” more than 60 people in Nicaragua remained “unjustly detained or disappeared,” reflecting ongoing concerns over human rights and political repression in the country.

Critics see the release as a limited gesture rather than a substantive change in Nicaragua’s approach to dissent and civil liberties.

Rights organizations tracking political detentions confirm that although a portion of detainees have been freed, many others remain behind bars, some arrested in recent weeks for openly commenting on regional developments such as the U.S. capture of Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro.

Opposition figures and exile groups welcomed the releases but insisted that all political prisoners should be freed without exception.
