By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Reports from China suggest an uptick in flu-like illnesses, with human metapneumovirus (HMPV) among the causes, though the Chinese CDC has yet to confirm an outbreak.

Data from the last week of 2024 shows a rise in influenza cases, but HMPV is also responsible for 6.2% of respiratory illness tests, surpassing other flu-like viruses like COVID-19 and adenovirus, Newsweek reports.

HMPV, discovered in 2001, is a virus similar to respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and spreads through coughing, sneezing, and contaminated surfaces.

It affects people of all ages but is particularly risky for young children, older adults, and those with weakened immune systems.

Symptoms include cough, fever, and a stuffy nose, and in some cases, it can lead to pneumonia or bronchitis.

There is no specific treatment or vaccine for HMPV, and health officials recommend treating it like the flu—staying home, washing hands, and avoiding close contact.
