International News: Nearly 6 million Haitians face severe hunger as crisis deepens

By Zoila Palma:  Nearly six million people in Haiti are experiencing severe food insecurity, including almost two million facing emergency levels of hunger, according to a new report released Wednesday by the United Nations-backed Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC).

The report estimates that 5.94 million Haitians are struggling to access sufficient food, representing more than half of the country’s population.

The worsening crisis is being driven by escalating gang violence, widespread displacement, high food and fuel prices, and extreme weather conditions associated with El Niño.

Armed gangs have forced farmers from their lands and blocked major roads, disrupting food supplies to Port-au-Prince and other communities.

Humanitarian organizations are also struggling to reach affected families, with some forced to travel as far as 15 kilometres to access food distribution sites. The IPC warns that the number of people facing severe hunger could rise to 6.35 million by mid-2027.

Humanitarian agencies are calling for urgent assistance as violence continues to displace families and deepen food shortages.
