By Zoila Palma: The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) says El Niño has continued to strengthen, with an 83% or greater chance that a strong to very strong event will persist through January-March 2027.
NOAA reported that sea surface temperatures in parts of the eastern equatorial Pacific exceeded 4°C above average last month, signaling significant strengthening of the climate pattern.
NOAA said ocean temperatures beneath the surface of the eastern Pacific also remained more than 10°C above average at depth, while atmospheric conditions, including changes in winds, rainfall and convection, continued to reflect a strengthening El Niño.
The official outlook states that El Niño is expected to strengthen further through the end of 2026.
Forecasters estimate a 54% chance of a historic-strength event during September-November, rising to 83% for October-December before reaching 70% for November-January.
NOAA cautioned that while a stronger El Niño increases the likelihood of weather and climate impacts typically associated with the phenomenon, those impacts are not guaranteed in every location.
The agency said the current ocean-atmosphere conditions collectively point to a continued strengthening of El Niño, with the strong-to-very strong event expected to remain likely into the first quarter of 2027.
