By Zoila Palma: A Mexican National Guardsman fatally shot 3 fellow service members and wounded another inside a barracks in Michoacan over the weekend, CBS reports.
A federal official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the suspect has been detained and the incident remains under investigation.
The shooting took place just hours after a deadly car bomb exploded outside a police station in Coahuayana, killing five people in an attack so powerful that human remains were scattered across the area, according to local community police commander Héctor Zepeda.
The violence comes as the federal government intensifies its security operations in the troubled western state, deploying thousands of additional troops following two high-profile assassinations in recent weeks.
President Claudia Sheinbaum, who declined to comment further on the weekend attacks, had already sent 2,000 reinforcements to Michoacan after the killings of a prominent representative of the lime growers and Uruapan mayor Carlos Manzo.
The mayor’s death ignited two days of youth-led unrest in November, during which protesters torched government buildings and clashed with police, leaving more than 100 people injured.
Michoacan remains one of Mexico’s most contested criminal battlegrounds, with at least three U.S.-designated terrorist organizations—the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, United Cartels, and the New Michoacan Family—operating in the region alongside numerous splinter groups supported by the Sinaloa Cartel.
