By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: U.S. President Joe Biden has declared Thursday, January 9, 2025, a National Day of Mourning for former President Jimmy Carter, who passed away on Sunday at age 100.

In a statement, Biden called on Americans to gather in places of worship to honor Carter’s memory, inviting the global community to join in the observance.

Flags will fly at half-staff at the White House and all public buildings for 30 days from Carter’s death, El Paso Times report.

Biden also shared a tribute on X, recalling his long friendship with Carter, and emphasizing how the former president was beloved by millions worldwide.

Public memorials will be held in Atlanta and Washington, D.C., with a state funeral expected at the National Cathedral.

Carter, who served as the 39th president from 1977 to 1981, will be buried in Plains, Georgia, in the Jimmy Carter National Historical Park, next to his late wife, Rosalynn.
