International News: NASA releases stunning images from Artemis II Lunar Flyby

By Zoila Palma:  NASA has released the first photos captured by the Artemis II crew during their historic flyby of the moon’s far side.

The mission’s four astronauts — commander Reid Wiseman, pilot Victor Glover, mission specialist Christina Koch, and Canadian Space Agency specialist Jeremy Hansen — spent seven hours aboard the Orion spacecraft, named Integrity, taking observations and photographing the lunar landscape.

Among the highlights is a striking “Earthset” image, taken at 6:41 p.m. ET on April 6.

The photo shows a muted blue Earth with bright clouds setting behind the cratered lunar surface, while the Ohm crater’s terraced edges and central peaks are visible in the foreground. Later, the crew also captured “Earthrise,” recreating the iconic Apollo 8 photograph, with Earth appearing as a delicate crescent above the rugged lunar horizon.

The new image collection also includes a view of a solar eclipse experienced during the flyby.

From the crew’s perspective, the moon completely blocked the sun for nearly 54 minutes, a totality far longer and more expansive than can be seen from Earth.

Astronauts used eclipse viewers to protect their eyes, with Glover noting to mission control: “Humans probably have not evolved to see what we’re seeing. It is truly hard to describe.”
