By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: More than 20,000 people have been displaced in Haiti’s capital, Port-au-Prince, in just 4 days due to escalating gang violence, according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM).
The UN agency warned that the humanitarian situation is worsening, with the isolation of the capital exacerbating the crisis.
“The isolation of Port-au-Prince is amplifying an already dire humanitarian situation,” said Gregoire Goodstein, Haiti chief for the International Organization for Migration.
The IOM reported that around 17,000 of the displaced have sought temporary housing, with many already having been displaced multiple times. This level of displacement has not been seen since August 2023.
Gang violence in Port-au-Prince remains rampant, with armed groups controlling up to 80% of the city.
Despite the deployment of a Kenyan-led international force to assist Haitian police, gangs continue to target civilians.
The violence has resulted in nearly 4,000 deaths this year, according to the UN’s human rights office.
Meanwhile, Haiti’s recent political developments saw Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aime sworn in on Monday, replacing Garry Conille.
Haiti’s international connectivity has also been disrupted, as the U.S. has suspended civilian flights to the country following gunfire incidents involving jetliners at Port-au-Prince airport.
