By Zoila Palma: State Rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband were shot and killed early Saturday in what Minnesota officials are calling a “targeted political attack.”
State Sen. John Hoffman and his wife were also critically wounded in a similar shooting nearby, ABC reports.
Gov. Tim Walz confirmed the shootings at two separate homes in Champlin and Brooklyn Park, just north of Minneapolis.
Officials say the suspect impersonated a police officer and knocked on victims’ doors before opening fire. Hortman, a former House Speaker, was described by Walz as “irreplaceable.”
The suspect, dressed as an officer and driving a vehicle with police lights, exchanged gunfire with real officers at Hortman’s home before fleeing on foot. A hit list of lawmakers was later found in the suspect’s vehicle, prompting increased security for others named.
Both shootings occurred hours apart. Hoffman and his wife remain in critical condition following surgery. The manhunt for the suspect is ongoing, and Brooklyn Park remains under a shelter-in-place order.
Federal and state agencies, including the FBI, are investigating.
President Trump and Attorney General Pam Bondi condemned the attack, promising justice.
