International News: Milwaukee County Zoo welcomes Jaguar ‘Filly’ from Belize Zoo

Posted: Thursday, January 30, 2025. 3:07 pm CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: The Milwaukee County Zoo (MCZ) has announced the arrival of Filly, a 6-7-year-old female jaguar transferred from the Belize Zoo.

Filly was rescued in 2019 as part of the Belize Zoo’s Human Jaguar Conflict Program, which helps jaguars that prey on livestock due to injury, age, or illness.

The transfer process, a collaboration between the two zoos, took four-and-a-half years to complete.

The zoos share a longstanding partnership dating back to the 1980s. MCZ’s male jaguar, Frankie, is the son of Pat, another jaguar rescued under the same program.

Filly will undergo a quarantine period at the Animal Health Center before being introduced to her new home in Florence Mila Borchert Big Cat Country.

The zoo plans to introduce her to visitors at a later date.
