By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Millions of Hindu devotees are flocking to Prayagraj, India, for the Maha Kumbh Mela, the world’s largest religious gathering, which began this week, CNN reports.
Over six weeks, 400 million people are expected to bathe in the sacred Triveni Sangam, the confluence of three holy rivers, to purify their sins and seek spiritual liberation.
The festival, held every 12 years, celebrates the Hindu myth of demons and gods fighting over an elixir of immortality.
The event attracts Hindu holy men, or sadhus, known for their distinctive appearance. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has invited global visitors to the UNESCO-recognized festival, which is also a major cultural spectacle.
Authorities have prepared extensively for the massive influx, building 160,000 tents, 150,000 toilets, and a 776-mile water pipeline.
Additional safety measures include a security ring, 2,700 AI-powered cameras, drones, and over 1,000 police officers. The festival runs until February 26.
