By Zoila Palma: As the U.S. government shutdown stretched past the one-month mark on November 1, millions of Americans began to feel the deepening effects of halted federal funding.
Despite a judge’s order requiring the administration to release contingency funds for SNAP food assistance, President Donald Trump said payments would likely be delayed.
The lapse threatens food access for more than 40 million people nationwide who rely on SNAP benefits, while several governors have pledged to use emergency state funds to temporarily fill the gap, NBC reports.
The shutdown has also forced the closure of more than 130 Head Start programs, which serve nearly 59,000 children from low-income families with free meals, health screenings and early learning services.
Lawmakers have yet to reach a deal to reopen the government, with Senate Democrats refusing to back a temporary funding bill unless Republicans agree to extend Affordable Care Act subsidies.
Without an extension, analysts warn that premiums could soar by over 100%, potentially leaving millions without coverage.
Meanwhile, air travelers across the country are facing growing delays as TSA and air traffic control staff continue to work without pay.
The ongoing standoff in Congress threatens to set a new record for the longest government shutdown in U.S. history by Wednesday, surpassing the 35-day closure that began in 2018 during Trump’s first term
