By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Millions of Mexicans marked the Virgin of Guadalupe Day on Thursday, celebrating the country’s patron saint with large gatherings at Mexico City’s Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe.
Pilgrims, including María Luisa Vázquez Mendoza, who walked 16 hours from the State of Mexico, honored the 493rd anniversary of the Virgin’s apparition in 1531.
The day also highlighted the continued violence gripping the country, despite calls from the Roman Catholic Church for a truce.
The Mexican Council of Bishops had urged an end to cartel violence, citing the toll it takes on families and communities.
However, in Guanajuato, the nation’s most violent state, 15 bodies were discovered on the streets, with a pile of human remains found near Salvatierra.
Despite the violence, over 11 million worshippers visited the Basilica in the days leading up to the celebration, many walking from remote villages.
Devotees, some barefoot or on their knees, expressed hope that the church’s call for peace might inspire greater humanity and awareness.
